When is the Wellington Square Upgrade due to be completed?

    The park is on track to be completed in April 2021, once the playground construction has finished.

    When will the Stolen Generations artwork be installed?

    The Place of Reflection is now constructed. Design and manufacture of the Stolen Generations Artwork is underway, with the contract for the artwork being awarded to Sandra Hill, Visual Artist. At the centre of the artwork will be two Karraks (red tail cockatoos), one male one female, 10 metres and 8 metres tall respectively. These will be the centre pieces and will be illuminated with red lighting. The Karraks will be surrounded by five Mias (houses – pronounced ‘Myers’) constructed from cast iron. The artwork will take 18 months to complete, and it is planned to officially unveil the work on site on Sorry Day 2022, with actual construction to be complete by March 2022.

    What is the City of Perth doing to increase safety?

    The City has engaged security contractors, with 1 x team of 2 Safe City Security patrols. This service started on Monday 14 September and is operational 7 days a week from 8am to 6pm in East Perth. Safe City Rangers and Safe City Security are actively patrolling. The teams are dealing with any issues or requesting Police attendance to those who will not comply. At Wellington Square, Rangers do a drive through or drive around and Safe City Patrols do a walk through around 10am and again in the afternoon between 2:30pm and 4pm. 

    The City has also engaged Rooforce to support engagement with the Aboriginal community and provide referrals to support services. Rooforce attend Wellington Square and Victoria Gardens daily and engage with people in the park. Whilst Rooforce are not an enforcement entity they work closely with Safe City Rangers, Safe City Security and request Police attendance to those who will not comply with the law. 

    The City has multiple fixed and mobile CCTV in the area which are monitored 24/7 by Citywatch and responds to reports from community to coordinate appropriate responses from either Ranger, Security or WA Police depending on the issue. 

    How do I report anti-social behaviour in Wellington Square?

    The City encourages the reporting of anti-social and criminal behaviour to the Police on 131 444. The City is working with the WA Police and appropriate social services regarding the issues being experienced at Wellington Square. It is important for the appropriate authorities to be informed about Antisocial & unlawful behaviour. Anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drugs, intimidation, public disturbance, assault or threats must be reported to WA Police on 131 444 or 000 for emergencies.     Will the City activate the space whilst the plan is being developed?

    The City is always looking for opportunities and ideas for Wellington Square for community benefit. As well as assessing existing operating projects which could potentially be redirected to be delivered in Wellington Square, working collaboratively and strategically across the service units of the City.

    Why are accredited services being delivered on Wellington Square?

    The Public Transport Authority of Western Australia commenced road works at the Moore Street service delivery site on Monday 14 September 2020 and services were required to temporarily relocate to Wellington Square to accommodate these works. 

    The City of Perth provides two security officers onsite throughout service delivery and arrive 30mins prior to service delivery and remain on site 30mins after service delivery to ensure all people accessing and providing the services leave the area safely. 

    The Accreditation of Homeless Services in the Public Realm trial has proved to be successful and the City of Perth took the opportunity to install permanent infrastructure at Moore Street, including shelters. Construction work is continuing at Moore Street and services will be relocating to Moore Street again in the future.
