Consultation has concluded

We want to shape the future of Wellington Square, together.

Overview

The City of Perth committed to a $18.7m upgrade of Wellington Square with the aim of transforming the 19th century landscape into a contemporary city park to be enjoyed by the whole community and give a sense of place. Extensive community consultation and research has been conducted since December 2016 to inform the redevelopment Masterplan. The redevelopment began in late February 2020.

Upon completion, the newly redeveloped park will be inclusive of:

  • A place of reflection and healing for Aboriginal people of the Stolen Generation;
  • Multi-use sports spaces catering for various sporting activities;
  • Formal events spaces with in-built infrastructure to allow for large scale events;
  • Open parkland social spaces with a variety of seating options;
  • Basketball courts with lighting and silent backboard to allow night time use;
  • Barbeque and picnic facilities, including shelters to provide shade and seating;
  • Public artwork telling the story of Wellington Square, including the ‘Kids tree’;
  • New garden beds and native plants added;
  • Interpretive water element to acknowledge the historical chain of streams, swamps and lakes;
  • Kiosk and toilet blocks; and
  • Intergenerational play space.

We are seeking your feedback and input

An Activation Action Plan is now required to consider specific actions for Wellington Square, the outcome of which will aim to connect and leverage the East Perth and Claisebrook neighbourhoods to improve livability in the area and connection to Wellington Square. The City of Perth is keen to understand the community’s vision for Wellington Square and how they would like to regularly engage with the Park, working closely with the community and ensuring they are informed of the outcomes we aim to deliver through the Activation Action Plan.

Open engagement sessions will be taking place from March onwards and dates are as follows with further sessions to be announced:

10th April at Wellington Square - Launch event, 11am to 4pm

24th April at Perth City Farm - Farmer's Market, 8am to 12pm (Cancelled due to State Government COVID-19 restrictions)

1st May at Wellington Square, 9am to 11am (Cancelled due to State Government COVID-19 restrictions)
