    What is a Heritage Strategy?

A Heritage Strategy sets out how an organisation will manage its heritage resources and deliver on statutory obligations. It may also identify projects that are important for the community.  For local government, this means the legal requirements to manage a Local Heritage Survey and a Heritage List. It may also include other programs such as grants, oral histories, heritage events or celebrations.

Why does the City of Perth need a Heritage Strategy?

A Heritage Strategy helps communicate what action the City is taking to conserve Perth’s cultural heritage. Perth has a rich and interesting history, stories of local, state and national significance, and a diverse range of heritage places. The City of Perth values and respects this history and heritage and invests resources that help to identify, conserve and celebrate important stories, objects and places.

Does the Draft Heritage Strategy only consider historic buildings?

No. The Draft Heritage Strategy is broad and can consider all aspects of Perth’s diverse heritage, whether it is attached to a place, an event, a memory, story or object.

Has any community consultation already occurred?

No. This comment period is the first opportunity for general community input into the Draft Heritage Strategy. During the first phase of the project, the City undertook research and evaluation of the existing heritage program and consulted with members of Heritage Perth Inc. which included representatives from the private sector, Government and not for profit.

Will the Heritage Strategy be relevant to me?

The Draft Heritage Strategy highlights the importance of the history of Perth, before and after colonisation and will be of interest to a wide range of people. It is likely to interest people concerned about history, cultural traditions and practice, research, historic places, parks and landscapes, cultural collections, traditional skills and trades, neighbourhood identify, urban planning, owners of heritage places and cultural tourism.

I own a heritage listed property – will the Heritage Strategy affect me?

The Draft Heritage Strategy provides information about the changes to heritage legislation in Western Australia and this includes the requirements for local government to undertake and maintain a Local Heritage Survey of places in its boundary. If you own or manage a recognised heritage place or a place that may have heritage significance, it is important that you understand what Local Heritage Surveys and Heritage Lists are and how these apply to both public and private property. The Draft Heritage Strategy will help you understand how your heritage property plays a part in sharing the history of Perth and the different ways heritage can be managed and conserved.

What are the next steps in the project?

Once the comment period has closed, the City will collate feedback and report to Council with any changes or additions to the Heritage Strategy and to adopt the document. This is expected to happen in late 2019 but any updates or changes to this timeline will be posted on the Engage Perth website.
