How will the survey responses be used?

The responses will assist the City to understand how the grants assist property owners. It will also contribute to a decision on the future of the Heritage Grants program.

    What does heritage listing mean?

Heritage listing is a generic term to describe the inclusion of a place which has cultural heritage significance on a list as determined by WA Heritage Act 2018 or WA Planning and Development Act 2005. City Planning Scheme No. 2 Heritage List contains places protected for their cultural heritage significance located within the City of Perth.

Legislation in Western Australia protects recognised heritage places that have been legally identified to be of State significance under the Heritage Act 2018. More than 50% of places on the City’s current Heritage List are also on the State Register because of their value to Western Australia. The City is also the location of 18 Registered Aboriginal Sites, protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972.

What other incentives are available to owners of heritage listed properties?

The City offers two heritage incentives to developments involving heritage places under the City Planning Scheme No.2. The City may award additional plot ratio to developments, or allow the transfer of unused plot ratio from one site to another.

The City acknowledges the value heritage properties bring to our community and as such, may contribute 50% to general residential rates to encourage and support owners who maintain their buildings. Concessions must be applied for on an annual basis.

Should I do the survey if I am not a property owner?

The works and documents funded through the City's Heritage Grants assist the owners of properties, which in turn provides benefits to the wider community. The City would like to know the community's view on these grants even if you're not a property owner.

The heritage places within the City of Perth contribute to the amenity of the city which the whole community enjoys. Cultural and natural heritage places help us to tell the story of who we are and provides environmental, social, economic and cultural benefits to the community now and into the future.
