Consultation has concluded

The City of Perth is proposing to rename Nelson Avenue to Sailani Avenue. At the meeting held on 27 September 2022, the Council resolved to consult with the community and other stakeholders in renaming Nelson Avenue. Nelson Crescent runs in an easterly direction from Plain Street turning into Nelson Avenue, at approximately the intersection with Braithwaite Street, north to Nile Street, East Perth.

Map of Area

It is proposed to rename Nelson Avenue to Sailani Avenue in recognition of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers while serving with the ANZAC’s. Private Sailani was one of the 12 known Indian Anzacs who enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces during WW1 and was one of two Indian Anzacs killed in the Belgian campaign. Private Sailani is buried in Belgium, alongside fellow Australian soldiers who were killed in action. He is the recipient of three medals including the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the 1914/15 Star.

The City seeks your feedback in regard to the proposed renaming request. Any comments on the proposal should be made in writing and returned to the undersigned no later than 11 November 2022.
