What impact will the revised policy have on existing signage?
The revised policy applies to new signs or change of content to an existing approved sign. There will be no impact on existing approved signage unless new signage content is proposed.
Do all signs need development approval?
No, signs that comply with the policy requirements applicable to the sign type can be exempt from development approval. Further details on the criteria for exemption is provided in Section 5 of the revised policy. Please note, a building permit may still be required.
Is third-party advertising allowed?
Third-party advertising is allowed in certain situations. Section 7 of the revised policy sets out the criteria for third-party advertising signs.
Has the requirements for signage on heritage buildings changed?
Minor changes have been made to the heritage provisions for clarity and conciseness.
What impact does the revised policy have on signage with time limited development approvals?
Once the time period on the development approval has lapsed, any future development application for the sign will be assessed under the revised policy.
If I get approval for my sign from the City, do I still need to get approval from Main Roads WA?
Some signage needs approval from both Main Roads WA and the City. Main Roads WA has a separate policy (Guidelines for Advertising signs Within and Beyond State Road Reserves) that outlines Main Roads WA’s requirements for signage. The City’s revised policy has been drafted to align with the Main Roads policy.
Are wall murals considered signage under the revised policy?
Murals are not considered signage unless they include elements of marketing that advertise or announce a product, business or place.
