Consultation has concluded
Overview
The City of Perth is proposing to convert Hay Street (between Victoria Avenue and Bennett Street) and Victoria Avenue (between Adelaide Terrace and Hay Street) from one-way to two-way operation. The proposal is part of the City’s on-going Two-way Streets Program and is the next stage of conversion following the recent opening of Hay Street between Irwin Street and Victoria Avenue in November 2020.
The proposal will improve network legibility and permeability, create a revitalised and activated street as well as bringing the following benefits:
Prioritisation of people: slower traffic creates friendlier spaces for pedestrians and creates people-oriented City streets
Sustainable transport: encouraging sustainable transport choices by providing a safer, easy to navigate, environment for walking and public transport
Benefits to the driver: more route choices make it easier to find your way around, decreasing unnecessary circling trips and driving distances
Key features of the Hay Street Two-way scheme include:
Introduction of two-way traffic flow on Hay Street (between Victoria Avenue and Bennet Street) and Victoria Avenue (between Adelaide Terrace and Hay Street)
Improved pedestrian crossings facilities at signalised intersections including Parallel Walk phasing at the Adelaide Terrace / Victoria Street intersection
An overall reduction in vehicle kilometres travelled on the road network
Following finalisation of the design, construction of the proposed upgrades to Hay Street and Victoria Avenue are scheduled to occur in mid-2021.
