The Hay Street Mall had a major redevelopment in 2003. What does this revitalisation aim to achieve?

The Hay Street Mall Public Realm Concept Plan is not proposing a full redevelopment of the mall, but rather refreshing elements such as street furniture and lighting. A major aim is to de-clutter the mall by modifying and removing redundant elements.

What is the City doing about anti-social behaviour and rough sleeping in the Hay Street Mall?

    The City is:

    • reviewing Ranger numbers, patrol methodology, hours of operation and exploring ideas such as Rangers on bikes; and

    • working with specific business owners to address anti-social behaviour in the evenings.

In addition, WA Police are looking to increase their presence on the streets by providing extra officers and increasing foot, bike and vehicle patrols.

The City of Perth is currently working with a range of State Government departments, agencies and community service providers to address social issues in the City. Antisocial behaviour, violence, drinking and drugs are dealt with by the Police, who have powers which can be used to address most of these issues.

What is the best mode of transport to access the City centre, private vehicles or public transport?

The City of Perth encourages sustainable modes of travel to create a more liveable and pedestrian friendly city. Hay Street Mall is located near all the major public transport hubs and there is a free CAT bus system within the City of Perth

How can we get a better mix of uses in the Mall?

The City of Perth is currently reviewing outdoor dining regulations to facilitate increased activation through food and beverage operators. Also, the City has existing grants available to businesses and would encourage the activation of unused upper floors. Further information is available on the City’s website.

Why do we want more activity in Hay Street Mall at night?

Greater activity at night will make the mall feel safer. There should be a variety of uses and cultural and entertainment activities, as well as places to eat and drink.
