Why is the City undertaking the project?
The City is facing the potential loss of a significant quantum of parking spaces in coming years with the closure of several key City of Perth sites. An opportunity exists to explore redevelopment of the City-owned car park at 1-13 Murray Street, Perth (Fire Station Car Park) with additional parking bays to offset the loss of supply at nearby sites.
As part of the Corporate Business Plan 2024/25 Elected Members have endorsed a detailed investigation and feasibility assessment of the redevelopment of the site, with development options incorporating a multistorey car park as well as a mix of residential and community uses. A preferred redevelopment option will be recommended to Elected Members before the end of financial year 2024/25.
What is the City of Perth engaging the community about?
The City is interested in better understanding the current use and demand for City of Perth assets nearby the Fire Station Car Park. Consultation with current nearby car park users will uncover insights on their interest in utilising additional bays at the Fire Station Car Park and will help inform the parking demand study, development option design and eventual feasibility assessment for redevelopment of the site.
Will there be changes in the way that the site is used?
All redevelopment options being explored on the site incorporate a significant increase to the current quantum of parking bays. Residential uses and community facilities are also being explored in addition to a multistorey car park development. Therefore, a change in the primary land use of the site as a car park is not being considered.
How long will this project take?
Community and stakeholder engagement is currently underway, with parking demand and transport studies to be finalised in early 2025. Concept design of redevelopment options and detailed feasibility assessment will occur from January – March 2025, with a preferred redevelopment option recommended to Elected Members before the end of financial year 2024/25.
