Since 2011 the City of Perth, in collaboration with Main Roads WA, has introduced 40 km/h speed zones across Central Perth and Northbridge. Over the years, these zones have been expanded in response to community requests such as the recent traffic speed changes in Terrace Road.

Speed reductions offer multiple benefits, including improved road safety by reducing the severity of crashes, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment, lowering noise pollution, and supporting placemaking by fostering vibrant, people-centric streets that encourage walking, cycling, and local business activity.

What’s been done to date:

The community was consulted on the proposal to expand 40 km/h speed limits across the city between 31 March 2025 and 30 April 2025. View the Survey Summary.

Feedback received informed the development of various options with the preferred approved by Council in November 2025. View the Option 2 – Approved Plan.

What’s next?

The City is developing an implementation plan. Subject to approved funding, installation is planned for late 2026. Further information, including the staging of these works, will be provided on this page in the coming months.
