East End Cobblestones
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link21 Sep 2020The construction crew have uncovered some original cobblestones on Pier Street as part of the City of Perth’s East End Revitalisation project.
More than 1000 stones from the 1920s or earlier are now in safe storage, with hopes to re-use them in the East End Revitalisation Project.
Fiona Hook from Archae-Aus says while commonly referred to as ‘cobblestones’, these stones appear to have been cut or dressed in a quarry and are not naturally shaped cobblestones.Click the link below to see Archaeologist Fiona Hook and the City's Cultural Heritage Engagement Officer discuss the find.

Uncovering History in the East End
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this linkDuring recent works on Pier Street the construction crew uncovered original granite cobblestones dating back to the early 1920’s. It is thought the cobblestones which weigh 2 kilograms each, came from Stathams Quarry in Gooseberry Hill and were similar to the early asphalt roads that appeared in Perth in the 1880s.
Pier Street was one of the earliest streets in Perth, running all the way down to Government House and Pier Street Jetty. It is no coincidence the cobblestones were used on this street, as they distinguished the more affluent side of the City, featuring Government House and the churches.
The cobblestones have now been removed and are stored away awaiting their next home, likely in another area of the East End.

Construction of the first pedestrian priority precinct in WA begins
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link05 Aug 2020Construction on Western Australia’s first pedestrian priority precinct has commenced on Hay Street in the east end of Perth's CBD.
As part of the City of Perth’s East End Revitalisation Program, key features of the precinct include reducing speed limits for vehicles to 20km/h, wider footpaths, upgraded LED lighting and a greater opportunity for outdoor dining to encourage people to stay longer.
“With alfresco dining, new street trees and attractive street furniture, visitors, residents and workers will be encouraged to dwell, eat and shop in the area,” City of Perth Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said.
Aiming to change the character of the street, the Hay Street pedestrian priority is a unique and innovative collaborative project between the City of Perth and Main Roads.
Both organisations have worked together to orchestrate the pedestrian priority design, providing more space, safety and amenity for people of all abilities without compromising the functionality of the street.
Street furniture and street trees will be installed to help delineate the carriageway and there will be wide designated pedestrian crossings in key areas for the visually impaired.
“The program will support the creation of great streets; streets that are comfortable, safe and tree-lined with plenty of reasons to stay,” Chair Commissioner Hammond said.
“The design will ensure an inclusive space for all users, making sure the area is as accessible as possible for people with and without disability.”
Main Roads Director of Congestion and Movement Strategy Mehdi Langroudi said he was happy to see a contemporary urban design of the highest quality adopted by City of Perth to ensure delivery of an exciting public space where pedestrians were prioritised.
“At Main Roads, we care about improving the road environment and will continue to support good urban designs which balance the needs of all road users,” Mr Langroudi said.
Once completed, it is expected that a total of 91 trees, both native and exotic, will be planted along the street and in planter boxes as part of the City’s Urban Forest Plan.
The canopy cover will mitigate the urban heat island effect, while stormwater retention and water harvesting tree pits will work to create a sustainable environment in the area.
Overall, the East End Revitalisation Program aims to improve the environment, character and permeability of Hay, Pier and Irwin Streets ensuring they are great, accessible and safe places for the community to be.
To encourage visitors and to support local businesses impacted during construction, the City of Perth has developed a business continuity guide and a voucher scheme for the East End.
Patrons are encouraged to visit Hay and Pier Streets and keep an eye out for City of Perth staff handing out $10 vouchers to spend at selected businesses in the area.
Additional voucher scheme businesses are listed below:
Bean Sprout
The Godfather Barber Shop
WooJeong Restaurant
Croissant Express
Smashup

East End Revitalisation construction works begin
Construction works on the much-anticipated East End Revitalisation program have started this week, with the City of Perth working hard to support local businesses in the area.
The East End Revitalisation Program aims to improve the environment, character and quality of the East End precinct through revitalisation of the streetscape in Hay, Pier and Irwin Streets.
Construction will also focus on the development of a Pedestrian Priority Zone (PPZ) on Hay Street, extending between the Pier and Irwin Street intersections - the first 20km/h PPZ in Western Australia.
With alfresco dining, new street trees and attractive street furniture, visitors, residents and workers will be encouraged to dwell, eat and shop in the area.
“The program will support the creation of great streets; streets that are comfortable, safe and tree-lined with plenty of reasons to stay,” City of Perth Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said.
“Key features of the precinct include wider footpaths, upgraded lighting and a greater opportunity for outdoor dining to encourage people to stay longer and activate the area which will support businesses in their recovery from this crisis.”
Construction staging will be flexible, with disruptive works being brought forward where possible before social distancing restrictions are fully lifted, as well as scheduling works to avoid the morning coffee or lunch rush.
To encourage visitors and to support local businesses impacted, the City of Perth has developed a business continuity guide and a voucher scheme for the East End.
Patrons are encouraged to visit Hay Street between Irwin and Victoria Streets and keep an eye out for City of Perth staff handing out $10 vouchers to spend at selected businesses in the area.
“The voucher scheme aims to support local businesses in the area and encourage visitation and spend in the precinct, providing patrons with a great experience that will hopefully encourage them to return,” Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said.
Participating businesses are listed below:
- East Café & Bistro
- Spring Café
- Perfect Photos
- Z Sushi
- Bench Espresso
- Cucina on Hay
- Cocoa and Rose
- Court Newsagency
- Offshoot
From 9 to 13 June, the City of Perth will also light up Council House with the letters #EER, signifying the start of construction for the East End Revitalisation and encouraging people to explore the development.

Kaal Yimniny
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link05 Jun 2020New Public Space gets a Whadjuk Nyoongar name - Kaal Yimniny
On 28 April 2020, City of Perth Commissioners endorsed the Whadjuk Nyoongar name Kaal yimniny meaning ‘fire here’ for a new public space in the City’s east end. Kaal yimniny refers to the area historically being used for fires, with the new space due to include overhead lighting, outdoor dining seating, raised planters and endemic planting.
The creation of a new public space on the corner of Hay and Pier Streets offered a unique opportunity to give the space a Whadjuk Nyoongar name and continue to acknowledge, recognise and engage with the traditional owners of city lands - the Whadjuk Nyoongar people.
The proposed name for the new public space has been selected by the City’s Elders Advisory Group, supported by South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and confirmed by the Noongar Language Centre. The City is pleased to confirm that this new place name has now also been formally supported by Landgate and will appear on City wayfinding signage, maps and in ongoing promotional material.
